What is the excitement of jewellery without its brightness, vividness and lustre? too often we neglect our jewellery and leave it to dull and lose its brilliance.
However, jewellery care is a simple process and can add years onto your jewellery’s life so that you and perhaps future generations can enjoy your precious heirloom.
Cleaning
- Jewellery can be polished up very easily with a cloth and help bring back the shine and brightness which can sometimes dull through daily wearing.
- White Gold pieces should be Rhodium Plated by a goldsmith ( a service we offer in Kinneys) to restore their bright white finish.
- Platinum similarly can be polished up professionally by a goldsmith ( a service we offer)
Pearls
- Your pearls will stay cleaner if you put them on after you’ve applied your makeup and perfume.
- Be sure to take off your pearl rings before you apply hand and body creams.
- Wipe your pearls with a soft, lint-free cloth as soon as you take them off. The cloth can be dampened with water or it can be dry. If damp, allow the pearls to air dry before putting them away.
- Dirty pearls can be cleaned with a mild soap and water solution.
- Never clean your pearls with solutions that contain ammonia or harsh detergents.
Inspect your jewellery!
- Examine your jewellery regularly and ensure all stone settings, clasps and joints appear to be secure.
- Claws used for holding down gemstones may loosen especially after daily wear caused by impact with surrounding objects, thus heightening the risk of losing the gemstone.
- Professional cleaning is recommended about once a year depending on how often you wear your jewellery. If you feel your jewellery is in need of repair, please contact us and we will try and assist you in the matter.
Store it properly
- Keep your jewellery in a clean dry place
- Jewellery boxes are best for storage.
- Try and keep each piece of jewellery separate so that the harder gemstones don’t scratch the softer ones.
Special Care
- Try to avoid wearing jewellery when you swim
- Avoid contact with household bleach – may cause permanent discoloration and erosion.
- Avoid exposing your jewellery to extreme heat.
- Avoid cleaning your gemstones with hot water and then proceeding to rinse them in cold water. The temperature variance could damage a gem.
